New 100m freestyle world champion and world record holder Pan swam leadoff, laying a solid foundation for the rest of the quartet. When replacing Wang, the Chinese opened a clear channel between them and the chasing group.
The Australian team threatened to reel them in, but the flying Chinese team showed no signs of slowing down. Lee, a long-distance ace who won silver medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle at this year’s tournament, showed remarkable speed in the third leg.
Yu then hit the final hit to the anchor that hit the wall, gaining a length difference over the second-place Australian with a time of 3 minutes 21.18 seconds. Australia came in second with a time of 3:21.78, and the American quartet took third with a time of 3:22.28.
This is China’s fourth relay gold medal at the 2024 Doha Games.
