Earlier this month, people from all backgrounds gathered at Dukinfield Town Hall to make Tameside’s first cultural fashion show a huge success.
The event, hosted by Mayor Tauheen Sharif, not only celebrated diversity and brought the borough’s community together, but also raised over £800 for her Charity Appeal Fund.
In an interview with the Tameside Reporter, Commissioner Tahu Sharif said: “Tameside has a diverse and beautiful culture and this unique event brought us together and reflected the best in all of us and the best in our culture.
“Dukinfield Town Hall is full of diversity, with people from all backgrounds and colors. When I first joined the council in 2016, I was the only ethnic minority there. But it felt strange.”
The packed Jubilee Hall displayed donated fashion from several retailers, and the audience enjoyed a variety of donated food reflecting the evening’s multicultural theme.
The hugely successful event demonstrated solidarity, love and understanding between people in and around Tameside, and raised vital funds for charity.
“Equality and inclusion are values close to my heart, which motivated me to organize the event. In order to bring understanding to all communities, it is important to highlight the positive aspects of each community. I believe it is essential.”
“I would like to thank the team of volunteers and retailers who helped organize and deliver Tameside’s first cultural fashion show: La Fashion, Poppets Place, Hope Couture and Resham,” the Mayor said.
The Mayor’s Charitable Appeal Fund is made up of Home Start (HOST), which provides specialist support to families with young children experiencing difficult times. West African Development supporting ethnic minority communities in Tameside. and Pauline Towne’s We Shall Overcome, which provides support to people experiencing homelessness.
