Festival and its design at the new MK&G retrospective

MK&G (Hamburg Kunstmuseum) is preparing its latest exhibition dedicated to the festival. This retrospective (until August 25, 2024) focuses on the origins of global celebrations, from festivals to ceremonies to parties, and how they play an important role in the evolution of human history and cultural exchange. MK&G presents “Ready to Party”

Aptly titled ‘Ready To Party’, this exhibition focuses on the four pillars of a successful ancient party. Processions, ceremonies, contests, and sharing of food and drink. Through MK&G’s collection of ancient art and antiquities, supplemented by loans from Naples’ National Archaeological Museum and Rome’s Capitoline Museums, among others, the wide-ranging collection tells stories through paintings and symbols on cups, sculptures, objects, and artifacts. The central theme focuses on how ancient festivals indicate the origins of today’s festival culture. Aiming to showcase the similarities between ancient and modern culture, contemporary film essays will be screened that dive into the world of international festivals, from Munich’s Oktoberfest to Wacken’s Heavy Metal Festival. Other rituals also demonstrate the dynamic nature of human culture, from secret burials in Hamburg to Aramaic weddings in Leda-Wiedenbrück, Gütersloh, and Herford.

The exhibition is divided into four chapters. The first is named after the classical festival of Panathenaea, a religious and political celebration held in ancient Athens honoring the goddess Athena. In Chapter 2, “Spectaculum Gladiatorum,” visitors learn about gladiator matches, which often involve violence and bloodshed. This chapter explains how games evolved into spectacles, given their origins in funerary traditions.

“Funeral and Burial Rites” questions the rituals involved in how festivals are celebrated, including how religions competed. The final chapter, “Secret Rituals,” examines the influence of Mithraic worship on the development of Christian festival culture.
