In a major update to the Tube map, lines have been given new colors and new names, which TfL says “celebrates the city’s culture and history”.
Transport for London has announced the new name for the London Overground line for the first time.
However, the orange circular part of London Overground will remain.
The new names are:
- London Euston – Watford Junction is known as the Lioness Line and is shown in yellow on the map.
- The Mildmay Line runs from Stratford to Richmond/Clapham Junction and is marked by a parallel blue line.
- A parallel red line from Highbury and Islington to Clapham Junction/New Cross/Crystal Palace/West Croydon, now known as the Windrush Line
- The green parallel line will become the Suffragette Line, the new name for the Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside Line.
- The line from Liverpool Street to Cheshunt/Enfield Town/Chingford is known as the Weaver Line and is a parallel maroon line on the map.
- Finally, the Romford to Upminster line has been renamed the Liberty Line and becomes a gray line on the map.Romford to Upminster Line
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: “This is a hugely exciting moment that will change the way we think about London’s transport network.
“Giving each line on the Overground a distinct color and identity will make journeys simpler and easier for passengers. In reimagining London’s Underground map, we are exploring London’s unique local history and We respect and celebrate different parts of our culture.
“The new name and colors were chosen through engagement with passengers, historians and the local community and reflect the heritage and diversity of our great city.”
Andy Lord, transport commissioner for London, said: “London Overground is one of the country’s most successful railways, having grown to carry more than three million passengers a week. The network has been in operation since 2007. It has grown significantly and is currently shown as a complex orange network on the route map. This can be confusing for customers who are not familiar with the network, and customers wishing to use the London Overground. This new name and line color will make it easier for customers to understand maps and routes, and we hope that more people will be able to use our services. It’s also a great way to tell the story of an important part of human diversity.”

It’s a very fitting name, as it speaks to what we’re proud of. At the time, this shared status helped bring together different communities.
