Ben Jeffries from agency Influencer spoke to Google UK’s VP of Marketing, Eileen Mannion, to clarify the search giant’s approach to creators and collaborative collaboration.
Google has been front and center in every iteration of the internet since the late ’90s. Although the company is still associated with the search functionality that reshaped information as the internet’s popular currency, it has since proven its agility and longevity through diversification.
Consider how Google works with content creators. Google is a key player as user-generated content defines the dawn of a new era of the internet and influencer marketing opens new avenues in marketing.
I spoke to Eileen Mannion, VP of Marketing at Google UK, to find out more about Google’s marketing success and why culture is king and driving empathy in the marketing mix. Mannion said: “Today, media is everything everywhere. Stay open-minded. Stay agile. Keep innovating. Keep listening to your consumers. Have fun. And always keep an eye on the metrics. please.”
creators around the world
Mannion is passionate about busting the common misconception that a creator’s place on the internet is on their social feeds. “Creators have become an integral part of the modern marketing mix and are essential to raising awareness and attracting diverse audiences. It has become a standard.”
Mannion said: “YouTube’s creative ecosystem alone represents over 45,000 full-time jobs and contributes £2 billion to the UK.” The power of creator status and the creator economy is now recognized industry-wide as a driver of sales. Their presence is clearly a medium.
A fundamental departure from Google’s early influencer marketing approaches is its embrace of collaboration and co-creation. Mannion elaborates: “Audiences follow creators because they create content they can’t find anywhere else, so collaboration is essential when working with this talent. , have been experimenting in this area, but this is not “new”. ”
To demonstrate the power of Chrome, Mannion claims the partnership with Jamal Edwards, MBE, is “one of the best ‘creator-led’ marketing activations we’ve ever done.” Mr. Edwards, who sadly passed away in 2022, personified his commitment to inclusion and talent advocacy at Google. His work changed the blueprint of the music industry, building channels on YouTube and providing a platform for a new wave of fringe music. Eileen recalls, “We gave Jamal the creative freedom to tell the story of ‘The web is what you make it,’ and the results were phenomenal.”
Taking a similar approach, Google partnered with creators like comedian Munya Chawawa to promote Google’s new AI tool Bard with his signature style of TikTok songs. This work involved the Chahuahua community, conveying Bird’s abilities and helping them prepare for the date. Mannion explains: “We give creative freedom to the creators we work with. If you impose too many guardrails or obligations, the work you get in return won’t feel authentic or impressive.”

This experimental approach to working with creators allows us to leverage their expertise and empathy to gain attention and drive results.
Creators as a means of connection
Audiences value the emotions expressed in the media they consume. Mannion said: “Audiences want their identities, passions and values to be reflected in the content they watch, so it’s important that we continue to support media and platforms that allow diverse talent to thrive. It is important to embrace these new ways of working and ensure we are adapting to this evolution.”
Google partners with creators like Steven Bartlett to tap into specific communities. Google gifted Bartlett his Pixel Fold, which he used to create Content calling technology his “second brain”, leverages his following who are business-minded and tech-savvy. Creators give brands a way to communicate with audiences in their native language through people they can relate to.

Also keep an eye out for Google’s “Pixel Lovers” campaign. The campaign featured creators like Big Brother host AJ Odudu and his rapper boyfriend Michael Dapaah telling real-life stories about Pixel smartphones. Mannion says brands can become part of the conversation by leveraging the role of creators in “penetrating mainstream culture.” As creators’ faces become more popular, so do the brands they work with.

Creators and community
Mannion says creators are “incredibly close to the ever-evolving culture, but it’s important to find the right people for your brand and build authentic relationships.”
The integration of sports culture and media is a great example of how brands connect with unique communities through creators. Recently, Google has been at the forefront of this relationship, collaborating with creators of all kinds.
Mannion emphasized that “it is essential for Google to boost women’s soccer by giving voice to creators and passionate fans,” especially through Google’s Pixel FC, which features a group of women’s soccer creators and presenters. are doing. Last summer, she said: She said, “Pixel FC content contributed to her 24% of views for 2023 Women’s World Cup content. [association football website] goal. ” Google worked with Influencer and Footballco across Pixel FC to increase the site’s coverage of the Women’s World Cup 2023 by 5x. We at Influencer also worked with Influencer and Footballco to increase the site’s coverage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup by 5x. We are proud to support Google’s sports marketing strategy through the participation of VIP creators in matches between FC and Arsenal FC. These clubs have increased our presence and showcased the unique features of Pixel smartphones. Ta.
Mannion emphasizes the ability of creators to act as catalysts for expression and be a force for connection and positive change. “Embrace diversity within your creator community. This will help you gain deeper knowledge of your audience and cultural landscape. Include the larger community and something small. ”
“Every consumer moment, interaction, and surface is a marketing opportunity and part of consumer behavior. Collaboration with creators should be part of a comprehensive plan,” Mannion says. In a world where creators are everywhere and everyone can be a creator, brands need to be collaborative and creative, focusing on community, culture and diversity. Creators play a vital role in helping brands connect with their audiences, whether mainstream or niche, by embodying authentic expression and communicating in a language that resonates with them.
