This year is the Year of the Dragon, and the Korean Culture Club and Korean Language Promotion Club came together to celebrate the Lunar New Year in style.
Seollal is Feb. 10, but KCC and KLEC hosted an event on Thursday, Feb. 8, where the Panthers enjoyed traditional Korean food, Korean games, and listened to modern Korean music.
Seollal (Korean New Year) is a day to celebrate the first day of the Korean lunar calendar.
This event is also based on the club’s attendance system, where the more students sign in to the club, the greater the chance of winning food gift cards at the end of the semester.
Norianne Aguila, a sophomore biology major, commented on some of the games available.
“There are small games like shouting in silence, drawing, tug of war, and small quizzes. In these quizzes, the winners are given small gifts such as stickers or pens,” Aguila said.
Amelia Villa, KCC president and communications major, spoke about the meal that night.
“I eat gimbap and Korean fried chicken. It’s almost like everyday Korean street food,” Villa said.
Kimbap is a dish of rice, fish, vegetables, and meat wrapped in seaweed. Korean fried chicken has less batter, is usually pan-fried, and has a sweet and soy sauce flavor.
Hanboks are traditionally worn during Lunar New Year, and some of them are available for students to try on for photos.
Guests can try traditional Korean games such as Yut Nori. Yutto Nori is a board game where you roll four sticks, and for each stick you roll up, he moves forward one place, and your goal is to finish at the top.
Some vendors also appeared selling out stationery items that are popular in Korea, such as cute notebooks, agendas, note cards, and ledgers.
In addition, there were stickers, pencils, and tote bags that were Sanrio memorabilia, and Sanrio was a cult favorite in Korea.
