A teenager who started a hair salon business in her mother’s spare room managed to earn £4,000, enough to rent a room in the salon.
Phoebe Taylor qualified as an eyelash technician last year and has already built up a long list of clients. The 17-year-old is juggling therapy alongside a part-time university degree, university courses and another job as an embroidery and vinyl specialist.
Due to her busy schedule, the Redcar teenager often works seven days a week. However, she was able to earn enough to rent her own treatment room at a local beauty studio on Main Street.
Phoebe used to work out of a spare room in her parents’ house in Redcar. She was inspired to see how much money she was making with her eyelash techniques and she thought, “I’ll give it a try.”
“It’s very rewarding,” she explained. “I don’t like to just sit around doing nothing. I always have to do something – people say I’m ambitious.
“I see all of my clients, and it’s amazing. I love them. Sometimes I work until 11pm, seven days a week, and sometimes I start work at 8am.
“I’ve always wanted to work for myself. That’s where the money is. I love eyelashes and all my beauty. I’m a true beauty girl.”
After trying it out, Phoebe found it “pretty good” and decided to do all the training. She has now released her own products, has an “amazing customer base” and has “sold over thousands at the age of 17”.
Furthermore, she added: “Some of my friends don’t know what they want to do after college. They don’t even know how I’m going to do it.” The “ambitious” teenager says she’ll be back in April 2023. He started his first business in May at just 16 years old.
Phoebe was offering eyelash treatments out of an empty “box room” in her mother’s home, but her customer base quickly grew and she said she had so many people coming in and out of her home. The young nail technician says she hopes to hire more staff in the future to offer a wide range of beauty treatments.
Some people told her she wasn’t making any money and would be out of business within a month, but Phoebe now earns over £4,000 and says she has never lost money in the business. She continued: “I started gathering clients in a small box room at my mother’s house, then grew my clientele and moved into my own beauty salon.
“My mom is really proud. She loves it, she immerses herself in her work, and that’s the first thing she says to people who meet her.” We received a lot of very good feedback. When I first opened, people said it was ridiculous, but now I can see I’m getting somewhere.
“So far I’ve earned £4,000 but with university and everything else it’s hard to earn more. I’d love to give it all up and work in beauty full-time. , just in case you need qualifications, so it’s a waiting game.
“I’m so proud of myself. I’ve had a really tough year, but when I look back, it’s amazing that I did it at 16 and 17 years old. It’s unbelievable. ”
Her mother, Victoria Taylor, is proud of her daughter’s entrepreneurial spirit and has helped her plan and budget for the future. Phoebe’s business is called her Seventeen Lashes and Brows or @seventeenlashesandbrows on social media.
