Another Amyris brand is back in the hands of its founder.
Francisco Costa announced the relaunch of Costa Brasil, the brand he founded with Amyris in 2019.
“Only good energy left for tomorrow’s @CostaBrazil launch,” a post on Costa’s Instagram page said.
On Tuesday, he wrote on the platform: “Costa Brasil is back. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the loyalty and partnership you have shown me since the beginning of this journey.”
The brand’s next phase comes after former parent company Amyris filed for bankruptcy last year, closing down both Costa Brasil and Onda Beauty, the retailer co-founded by Naomi Watts, just days before filing.
In October, Costa made a bid of $350,000 to take over the brand. That same month, Onda Beauty co-founder Larissa Thomson won the company’s name, website, lease and inventory in an online auction and has since reopened Onda’s New York store.
A spokesperson for Mr. Costa confirmed that he had won the bid.
Other Amyris brands are also up for auction, including flagship skincare brand Biossance, which was sold for $20 million by online beauty retailer THG Beauty. The brand’s products contain squalane, and it became known for developing its ingredient Amyris, which was sold to Givaudan in 2023.
JVN Hair, founded by Jonathan Van Ness, was sold to Windsong Global for $1.25 million. Windsong Global also acquired baby brand Pipette.
AA Investments (HK) Ltd. has acquired Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Rose Inc. brand for $2.5 million. Stripes, the menopause brand founded by Watts, was sold for $500,000 to Sakana LLC, of which Watts is a managing member.
