These two new contracts bring the total value of work awarded to Verhale under Thames Water’s AMP7 conditional allowance mains scheme to £24.8m.
The Victoria Station trunk mainline replacement and the Eversholt Street mainline replacement (with Euston station) join the recently announced Fortis Green mainline replacement, and Verhale will be part of Thames Water’s AMP7 upgrade program across London. This is being carried out as part of the project.
At Victoria Station, Verhale will repair more than a kilometer of 30-inch cast iron water mains. The works are split into two sections: 609 meters between Eaton Square and Victoria Street, and a further 412 meters to a point just south of the intersection with Warwick Way at Wilton Road.
The majority of the existing mains will be sliplined with 710mm SDR17 polyethylene pipe. Short cut-and-cut sections are required for launch pits, receiving pits, and connection locations. At these points, the original pipes are replaced by ductile iron pipes with a nominal diameter of 600 mm.
At Eversholt Street, near Euston station, Berhale will repair a 660m long 16in cast iron water main using a combination of openwork and sliplining, also using 355mm SDR17 polyethylene pipe.
Shane Gorman, Barhale’s Southern Regional Water Director, explained how the busy nature of both sites influenced the engineering solution.
“These are two of the most important rail gateways to the capital, with thousands of passengers passing through them every hour,” he said. “The roads around each site are also very busy, so we have developed an approach that not only protects the future water supply of each area, but also minimizes the impact on local communities, businesses, rail and roads. It was important to the user.
“Our engineers slipline existing water mains using numerous launching and receiving pits. This avoids extensive disruption that can be caused by continuous ditching. , which means we can deliver faster and better results. It also has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional trenchless methods.”
Handover and commissioning is expected to take place at Eversholt Street in spring 2024 and at Victoria Station towards the end of 2024.
