BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FL – Dennis and Lou Manley, owners of 4EVERYOUNG Anti-Aging Solutions and Fitness Club Merritt Island, recently presented a check to “Who We Play For” Directors Sean Cima and Evan Ernst.
4EVERYOUNG anti-aging solution The Merritt Island group celebrated its one-year anniversary last week and raised money by hosting a “Who Will You Play For” raffle that will be used to provide AEDs to the Merritt Island Pop Warner League .
Sudden cardiac death is the most common medical cause of death in athletes, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 80,000 athletes per year.
“You’re all really helping us save lives. We’re saving children’s lives,” said Sean Sima of Who We Play For. .
About who we play for
The story of Who We Play For began on November 30, 2007, at the goal line of the Cocoa Beach High School soccer field. There, Leif Maccarone suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) after warming up before the start of practice.
Leif passed away the next day, December 1, 2007, and it was later discovered that the condition that caused his cardiac arrest was called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Our community is struggling with the reality that a seemingly healthy, active 15-year-old boy who passed all his sports physicals could die of heart disease while playing the sport he loves most. I was upset.
The even more shocking reality we faced is that not only is Leif’s condition detectable and, in fact, the leading cause of SCA in sports, but that SCA in youth is a huge public health problem. I was told that there were also some countries that I recognized a long time ago. We have established screening protocols to identify at-risk children before they take the field. These efforts in countries such as Italy have reduced the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest by 89%.
This was a reality that our community refused to accept for our students, so in 2014 we founded WWPF as a 501 c3 and began partnering with schools across the state of Florida. Her six other states offer affordable EKG testing for students. Our goal is to ensure that EKG testing is not only essential, but also affordable and available to all children, regardless of their level of physical activity, socio-economic status, or geographic location. It’s about showing the country that something is true.
To date, WWPF has tested more than 100,000 people in more than 300 communities across seven states. We have identified 76 people who require some level of medical intervention, including a heart transplant, and hundreds of others who have abnormalities that can now be monitored.
The spirit of WWPF has always been to represent the thousands of children like Leif every year who suffer sudden cardiac arrest due to detectable heart disease, and the communities left behind to find solutions after these tragedies. It was. Each community we have served and will serve in the future has been affected by SCA in some way, and their stories will help us eliminate preventable sudden cardiac death in young people. This will help strengthen our mission.
