In a world often focused on personal gain and material success, Jabeno MacLean stands out as a beacon of love and compassion. For 20 years, this Jamaican-born fitness enthusiast has dedicated his life to helping older adults and people with chronic illnesses rediscover the joy of life through exercise. His journey began at the age of 16, fueled by a passion for cricket that eventually developed into a deep love of empowering others.
Jabeno MacLean believes in love and compassion for people, and his unique talent is his ability to inspire others to fall in love with movement and life itself. His first passion was cricket, but it wasn’t until he started training people at the age of 16 that he discovered his true calling. Born into a poor family in Jamaica, Jabeno was drawn to mentoring people with limited physical abilities and the elderly, and his journey took an unexpected turn.
His first client at the age of 16 marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to working with people who are often ignored by society due to physical challenges. Although no one in his family faced such challenges, Javeno found immense joy in helping people with unique abilities. The satisfaction he derived from coaching these people transcended the field of cricket and led him to redefine his purpose in life.
Jabeno’s vision became a reality six years ago when he established J7 Gym in Manchester, England. Breaking away from the traditional intimidating gym atmosphere, Javeno aimed to create a space where everyone felt welcome. This inclusive gym offers something for everyone, with dedicated sections for elderly and disabled guests. From church workouts to school playgrounds, Javeno’s journey has been marked by a commitment to making fitness accessible to all.
Notably, Javeno has never advertised his gym. Instead, he relies on the power of word-of-mouth recommendations. The trust he builds with his disabled and elderly clients is instantaneous and creates bonds that transcend professional relationships. For Habeno, they are more than just customers. They are “His people.” He acts like a big brother to him, affectionately calling his older customers “auntie” and “uncle” and even remembering their pets’ names.
Javeno’s unique approach to fitness involves a personal connection and an understanding of the emotional struggles his clients face. The 30-minute session is more than just an exercise. They turn into moments of accomplishment and joy. For Javeno, it’s about creating a fantasy world where people can temporarily forget their pain and rediscover the simple joy of smiling.
With Jabeno now training 17 people with disabilities a day, the impact on his clients’ lives is clear. Each of his 30-minute training sessions is a testament to his commitment to breathing life into those whose lives have been taken from them. “If I can make someone smile and be happy, it makes the whole family happy,” he says, acknowledging his unique position in the world and the huge impact his work has on the happiness of his clients. I am.
More than 400 people with disabilities and the elderly attend Jabeno MacLean’s gym each year, a testament to the transformative power of his approach. Beyond improving his physical fitness, he breathes life into those who feel their lives are slipping away, fostering a sense of community and belonging. In a world often defined by individual pursuits, Javeno MacLean is a reminder that love, compassion, and fitness can come together to make a huge impact on the lives of those who need it most. I’ll give it to you.
